MALS (Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome) Surgery

Median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS)

The median arcuate ligament is a band of tissue at the base of the diaphragm. In median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS), this band presses on the celiac artery, a main artery that supplies the stomach, liver and other upper abdominal organs. This can cause upper belly pain, often after eating, along with nausea and weight loss.

Dr. Campbell offers surgical treatment of appropriately selected patients with symptomatic compression of the celiac artery. The operation divides (releases) the ligament to take pressure off the artery. He will review your symptoms and imaging to see whether this surgery is right for you. At your consultation, Dr. Campbell will review your imaging and history and discuss whether a robotic, laparoscopic, or open approach is best for you.
